Xingze Li
Xingze Li contemplates the significance of walls, their emotional undertones, and their impact on our daily perceptions. When he feels disconnected from his hometown in Yan'an, China, walls provide Li with a space for contemplation and solace. He spends hours observing walls, immersing himself in the ambiguity and intricacy of their surface textures. The interplay between walls, objects, and lighting shapes the environments we inhabit, influencing our emotional well-being. With this in mind, Li creates ethereal portraits of walls, focusing on how they affect his own existence when he confronts them directly. The shared characteristics and subtle variations in the appearance of each wall enable him to project his personal experiences onto them. The artistic process begins by digitally photographing an indoor space and then transferring the image onto a flat, sculptural surface. Through the use of spray paint, printed photos, and shaped aluminum panels, Li blurs the line between reality and illusion, prompting viewers to connect with something often overlooked and yet exquisitely simple—the wall. It is within this simplicity that Li enriches the viewer's everyday encounter with the phenomenal world.
