Josh Alford
Joshua Alford is an artist based in Brooklyn, New York, known for his multidisciplinary approach. Originally from Fort Worth, Texas, Alford's abstract artworks draw inspiration from the material-focused experimental art movements of the 1950s and 1960s. He juxtaposes these influences with the graphic language associated with male-dominated American hobbies. Through drawing and printmaking, Alford explores the themes of hobby, boredom, and violence, which challenge the prevailing norms of a male-dominated art canon.
By incorporating elements of graphic design, macho abstract painting, and game/sport aesthetics in his work, Alford intentionally embraces his references. He believes that individuals who devote time to perfecting their aim, honing their skills in hitting the bullseye and keeping score, share similarities with artists developing their craft. Alford recognizes the expressive potential in various hobbies and passions, whether it is painting, gun collecting, or playing darts, as they provide insights into a person's identity and interests.
